Osaka Expo 2025
Our proposal for the EXPO Osaka competition showcased a profound commitment to sustainable architecture within a temporary exhibition context. Central to our concept was the creation of an open courtyard resembling a front garden, seamlessly extending the pavilion’s exhibition spaces. This courtyard was primarily surfaced with rammed earth, embodying our dedication to environmentally friendly materials.
The pavilion itself, envisioned by the archicraft studio, featured exhibition areas for visitors and two restaurants. It was constructed using locally sourced clay and wooden components recommended by Japanese experts, reflecting our team’s emphasis on utilizing the most indigenous solutions available.
To minimize transportation impacts, only essential components such as the sail and exhibits would be shipped to Japan. Physical objects were intentionally limited, with architects focusing on projection and visual effects tailored to the program and overarching theme. Archicraft emphasized the theme of folklore and its contemporary interpretations, highlighting landscape, craftsmanship, frugality, and fairy tales.
Glass played a pivotal role in the design, serving as a focal point to captivate visitors. The pavilion’s signage was integrated within the glass, subtly framed by bushes that evoked a poetic resonance with the landscape. This holistic approach aimed to create a memorable and sustainable architectural presence at the expo.
